In my music room …

My first volume of Beethoven Sonatas must be over a decade old. The binding is held together by some tape and has been used throughout my teenage years to learn Beethoven, to study him, enjoy him, be frustrated with him …. every emotion that comes to mind.

I am shooting for a concert in May in the Sacramento area and am attempting to perform an old friend: the third movement of the Moonlight Sonata. The only thing written on its original pages which I’ve had since my teenage years are the measure numbers. I thought to myself, “Why in the world did my teacher have me erase all the markings! I have to relearn everything!” Everything was erased because I presented this score during piano competitions once upon a time.

But perhaps erasing everything is a good thing! It opens up doors to relearn such a great piece of music! To rediscover Beethoven has been such a joy!
