Today is one of those days in which I wake up and realize how special a day it is today. It’s the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary! And on a day like today, I can’t help but be filled with much gratitude to have visited Ephesus and the home of the where the Blessed Mother spent her final days on earth with the Beloved Disciple! Her nativity reminds me of how close God is to us.
“Today the barren Anna claps her hands for joy, the earth radiates with light, kings sing their happiness, priests enjoy every blessing, the entire universe rejoices, for she who is queen and the Father’s immaculate bride buds forth from the stem of Jesse” (adapted from Byzantine Daily Worship).
God was so close to the Virgin Mary in Jesus the Lord. Jesus gave himself vulnerably and entirely to her as she fed him and cared for him. Must we not do the same? All of us, as human beings, need a mother to care and nurture us. In the spiritual life, there is no one more perfect than the New Eve. Let us turn to her for all our needs, for the salvation of our souls, for living in the joy of the Gospel.
