As this day draws to a close I think of these beautiful souls. Today, the Church celebrates the feast of a great saint: Maximilian Kolbe. He was the great franciscan priest who took the place of a husband in the concentration camps in Poland.
By offering his life, he becomes the shining example of self donation & self sacrifice as perfect gift. In other words, he becomes the example of true authentic love! Why? Because he truly knew the Lord Jesus.
Why do I think of the beautiful souls that I mentioned earlier in this post? Last year, we consecrated ourselves to Jesus through Mary and we studied the lives of four primary Marian theologians, one of whom is Maximilian. He named his little army in honor of Mary as the Militia Immaculata. He gave his life to her in the same manner of the infant holy child.
The Virgin Mary asked Maximilian what crowned he desired: red or white? Red for the crown of martyrdom and white for the crown of purity. He desired both. And so to us!! We must desire to have the crown of purity — a life so focused and oriented to the will of God, and the crown of martyrdom — dying to ourselves so that Christ may live in us.
