Here is the icon of Christmas in America’s malls and shopping centers during this time of the year. This magical jolly man fills the hearts of children around the world as he travels on sleigh with Rudolph to light the way on Christmas Eve to come down the chimmney and leave an abundance of gifts for children to delight in. Yet, the real Saint Nick comes from a much farther origin – the fourth century to be exact.
Bishop of modern day Turkey, he served the poor and proclaimed the gospel. He was the bearer of the good news as he cared for God’s people. In this season of Advent, we look to Nicholas as a model of giving without counting the costs. Ultimately, our greatest gift does not come down the chimney on a cold winter Christmas Eve. Rather, our greatest gift is that which cannot be found in a box. Christ comes and we wait for him to be born into our lives at Christmas. Saint Nick, pray for us.
Happy Feast Day & Names Day to my Godson!
