More than a queen, she is our mother

Above all titles, even before Queen of Heaven and Earth, she is Mother. Mary’s first and primary vocation is Mother of our Lord. She, too, is our Mother who constantly points us to Jesus, points us to the direction of holiness.

Today, is the octave of Christmas and in the gospel we hear of how “Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Lk. 2.19, NAB). This pondering is what we, as Church, are called to do. We may not have all the answers to God’s plan, but the Spirit invites us to remain open to God’s will and ponder these great mysteries in our hearts.  Guide us as we embrace a new year, O Lady. Guide our hearts and minds to love the Lord more deeply and more completely. May the joy of Christmas always be ours.

Here is a prayer close to my heart which I pray for every priest after Mass:

    The Gate of the Year

I said to the one who stood at the Gate of the Year
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied, “Go out into the darkness
and put your hand in the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way.”
    ( Minnie Haskins )

“For I am the Lord, your God, who grasp your right hand. It is I who say to you, “Fear not, I will help you.” ( Is 41: 13 )

May your journey ahead into the year 2013
always be hand in hand with God.

    Happy New Year!

    May God be forever praised!
