His Wife

Today’s liturgy of the Christian Burial was a very moving moment in the life of the parish. Above is the picture of Monsignor Patrick O’Neill, a young and vibrant priest at the time. He holds something very precious to the priest – his breviary.

In the seminary, the breviary is considered the “wife” of the seminarian. He is to have it with him at all times, spending time with it, praying with the rest Church at certain moments of the day and meditating on its scriptures.

So what I saw on top of his coffin was nothing more than amazing – his breviary, possibly the same breviary that is pictured in the program.

I can only begin to imagine the many years he has prayed with this sacred book – prayed for all God’s people entrusted to his care. Now in this final moment, his prayers are with him as he returns home to the Father and rests eternally in the Father’s gentle embrace. Until we meet again….
